Britain's Pagan Treaures with Mike

Paganism simmers beneath the surface of British culture, now rising into the public consciousness, and this is hardly surprising given the ancient past so readily to be found in England. In the course of a few weeks travel Mike visited many scenes and sites of pagan interest and here presents a photographic journal and his thoughts on the manifest pagan heritage so close to the English consciousness. From Stonehenge and Avebury to mythic beings in public artworks, a famous tree that would not burn, and a mummified human hand in a Yorkshire museum, England has many a pagan surprise in store for the curious traveller.

Early on he became interested in writing meditations - the first two were about a North American Indian Girl and another one about Joan of Arc followed.

The Dark Goddesses by Frances

"Frances has been exploring the occult since early adulthood and came to the realisation that the more she discovers, the less she knows and that this will be a life long learning journey. She describes herself as a Wytch, a Wiccan and an occultist, although not necessarily in that order. In the early 1990s Frances underwent training with English occult author David Rankine and upon her return to Australia, founded the Temple of the Dark Moon in 1999. After holding the position of secretary of Pagan Alliance Inc (SA) for six years, Frances resigned in 2006 to concentrate on her writing. Her articles have been published both in Australia and internationally, including "Insight" magazine and the 2008 Llewellyn Witches' Calendar, and she is endeavouring to have at least one of the books rattling around inside her head published in the not too distant future. Frances openly acknowledges her book addiction, and confesses she is rather partial to the 'odd' bottle of red wine."

"Journey back through the aeons to a time when the Great Earth Mothers created and walked upon the earth.  From these primal beginnings, they have been shaped by perception and a lack of appreciation of their true chthonic powers.  There are more aspects to the Dark Goddesses than that of the Crone, and they do not always play "nice".  Through increasing our understanding of their true purpose and developing/strengthening our relationship with them on their terms, we may appreciate the lessons they have for us."

Native Tree Propagation by Trevor

After seven years working as a volunteer with Trees for Life, I was part of the founding committee of Trees Please! Inc. a registered Landcare group working in the Adelaide Hills. Trees Please! Inc is now eleven years old. During this time I've collected seed from local native trees and shrubs and raised over 15,000 seedlings. I've always had a strong feeling for trees and for me this is an important part of the Pagan way of caring for the earth and all of nature.

The Workshop :-

I'll be bringing some seed and seed pods from the local Stringy bark tree (Eucalyptus obliqua), propagating mix and slow release fertilizer. I'll demonstrate how to collect and process seed, and how to fill tubes and plant seeds so you will be able to raise your own seedlings. If you've never done this before it will be quite informative and useful.

Forgotten Journey - Gary

\
To reconnect with the lost rite which was slowly phased out by Christian Churches from the 770s until 1600 when all burial sidhe mounds were closed by Cromwell.

A ritual that has been stopped through superstition because of the information the shamans received in these visions and their belief in these ancestral earth mother, fae and knowledge.

The shamans took these visions as fact and acted upon them in real life, whether they were for good or bad for the town, village.

The people already had mistrust and fear about the mounds.  The church prayed on these fears in the end forcing the locals to close them down.

Are you brave enough to take the ancient journey to the womb of the earth mother underneath the fert mound, which has been lost through superstition and folklore?

"Science and Spirituality - Partners or Protagonists?" With Virginia

In recent years, science has often been used to debunk myths, expose frauds and generally take the magic out of life. So how then does a scientist reconcile with being a pagan? What can Paganism learn from Science? As both a scientist and a pagan I have found myself confronting these issues on a daily basis. This forum will aim to examine some of the similarities between science and paganinsm thorugh discussion. Both scientific and non scientific people are welcome to join the discussion as we look for the benifits that a scientific mind can bring to paganism and a pagan heart can bring to science.

Virginia is a country girl at heart, growing up on a property on the Eyre Peninsula, however her experimental nature soon led her down the path of higher education from which she (eventually and after many interesting detours) graduated with honours as as hydrogeologist (water and rocks) from Flinders University. Strangley enough, Flinders University had an excellent Pagan group which she naturally fell into and after many FUPA Beltaines, had no wish to leave. So Flinders actually provided two educations (talk about a bargain!) one in science and the other in Paganism (less exams in paganism!).

Pagan Polyamory (abstract) - With Darren

Join Darren in a discussion centering around the often lively topic of Polyamory (Poly) and how his spiritual journey in Paganism supports this ‘alternative’ lifestyle.

So what is Polyamory?  So as not to confuse, Polyamory is a word invented in the late 90’s to describe people who find live with more than one person at a time and have meaningful relationships with them.  It is sometimes referred to as ‘Ethical Non-monogamy’ although this may be confused with other terms like Swinging, Fantasy Love or Partner-swapping, which are very different lifestyles.

Darren is a founding member of PolySA, an Adelaide based support group for Polyamorous people in the South Australian community.  Together with one of his partners, PolySA is gaining momentum after its first year in operation.  Darren is also a financial member of PolyVic, PolyOz and other support groups around Australia.  He is often involved in community discussion groups to help people understand what Polyamory is all about.

When Poly meets the various flavours of Pagan beliefs, many wonderful dynamics can be established.

Darren will talk about the What, Why and How that Pagan’s sometimes find Poly and how often Poly finds Paganism.  He has run similar sessions at Confest and other community events and has found the interactive style to set a comfortable space for people to discuss their thoughts and ideas.  His discussion will be adorned by personal stories of lessons learned, rituals and spells that can support love in this manner, resources available for the curious or interested and is happy to  openly and honestly answer questions about Polyamory as it relates to a Pagan lifestyle.

Meeting with Grail Maidens: Celtic Myth to Holy Grail

With Lynne

I love this term *”Grail Maiden”* for a woman of power in European culture.

She appears in Arthurian and Holy Grail stories when the Grail Knight needs to be guided or challenged. Caitlin Matthews suggests that “The sacred relationship of the Quester (the Grail Knight) and the Priestess of the Mysteries (Grail Maiden) is one of the most profound mysteries of the Grail”.

There has been a lot of emphasis on the ‘Hero’ journey of the Grail Knight but not much attention on the women he interacts with on his journey, who in fact are the agents of his transformation at each stage, enabling him in the end to achieve the Grail. Often it is a woman who guards the Grail and winning the woman is part of the deal.

Nimue, Dindraine, “Loathsome Ladies” - Dame Ragnel and Kundry, Morgan le Fay, Guinevere, Elaine, Lunedd, Elen of the Pathways, to name but a few, embody the ancient wisdom of knowing our place in the pattern of all life within sacred land, the natural world and cosmic forces. These stories and their characters have evolved from Gods and Goddesses of the Celtic World and still have a powerful resonance in the modern world, especially for those of us with Celtic ancestry.
*Grail Maidens* offer the Questing Knight a drink from the sacred well of wisdom and healing.

*Grail Maidens* offer women keys to empowerment through relationship with themselves, with partners and the natural environment.

*What are the origins of Grail Maidens in Celtic myth and culture? *

*How can a Grail Maiden reveal herself as a guide and agent of transformation for friends, partners, children and contemporary mainstream culture without loosing her personal sense of self on a spiritual journey.*

*How can a modern man on a spiritual journey relate to the Grail Maidens in his life?*

This workshop, for both men and women, will explore the stories and characters of some of the *Grail Maidens* of Holy Grail stories using storytelling, discussion and guided meditation to look at why Grail Maidens are important for us all in the modern world.
